Picture of a part with Φ0.3mm outer diameter, Φ0.2mm inner diameter and slot width of 0.1mm. Dimensional tolerance is with in ±0.005mm. This part is created in a single operation on a Swiss-type lathe.
For such micro fabrication, acquired knowledge of machining by experience is utilized. Perfect surface finishing or roundness cannot be obtained without such experience. Moreover, handling of a micro-part among cutting chips or in cutting fluid requires a lot of concentration and attention.
Inconel bar of Φ12 is machined with honeycombs, crossed 90 degrees. 97.3% of volume is eliminated. Super alloys like Inconel can be quite flexible this thin.
Inconel is a nickel-based alloy and very high heat-resistant, often used for jet engines. Heat-resistant alloys are in general difficult to cut because of poor thermal conductivity, cutting heat damaging the cutting tool locally.
The selection of cutting tools, the perfect handling and knowledge of a sophisticated machine, cutting conditions and know-how from experience must be harmonized to machine such alloys.
